Why did you choose a training opportunity/career with MHA Chiks?

MHA Chiks seemed like the perfect fit for me in terms of firm size/structure. The firm is big enough to provide experience on a wide variety of clients but also small enough to deliver high quality training that the larger firms would not be able to provide. When applying for the job it was very clear that a high level of support would be given, not only during my training contract but also once I’ve qualified and start progressing in my career.

Can you describe your job role on a day to day basis?

Working in audit, I spend most of my time at clients, reviewing their accounts to check for significant errors. I review their systems as well to ensure the relevant controls are in place in order to prevent fraud etc.

I also prepare accounts for both charities and academies.

Each day varies depending on the client and also depending on the sector the client is in (e.g. corporate, charity or academy). Each type requires a different set of skills and knowledge, there is always something more to learn.

What do you enjoy most about working at MHA Chiks?

MHA Chiks has a very friendly and supportive atmosphere – I have never felt intimidated or unable to ask a question; everyone is very willing to help one another. I also gain a lot of experience working on a wide variety of jobs which means I don’t get bored from constantly working on the same type of client.

How has MHA Chiks helped you?

MHA Chiks has helped me develop by encouraging me to be more confident in my abilities – I am constantly being given opportunities to progress in my career and apply the knowledge I have gained. Feedback forms are completed for each job I do, where the managers not only provide good feedback but also provide constructive comments to allow me to improve. Managers will then look for other jobs I could work on to allow me to gain more experience on that specific area and also further develop on the good feedback that has been provided.

What are your goals for the future?

My main goal is to qualify as an ACA chartered accountant. Once I have qualified, my goal is to become a manager on a mixture of clients. I also want to develop my knowledge of academies as I believe a lot of experience can be gained from this.

What advice would you give to somebody starting at MHA Chiks?

Starting a new job can be overwhelming, but everyone is friendly and accommodating; don’t be afraid to speak up and ask for help/guidance.

Why did you choose a training opportunity/career with MHA Chiks?

I chose to work at MHA Chiks due to its excellent reputation in the local area, which was evident in its sponsorship of events such as the local cricket competition. From the minute I walked into the building I was made to feel extremely welcome by everyone I encountered, and it felt like this was the perfect place for me to start my professional career in accountancy.

Can you describe your job role on a day to day basis?

As part of the audit and accounts department at MHA Chiks, I encounter different challenges each and every day, and as such, no two days are ever the same. My job involves tasks such as communicating with clients, solving complex problems and learning new skills. When it comes to exam season, I also benefit from being able to use my study leave to attend tuition and revision classes which is helpful and definitely reduces the stress (a little!).

What do you enjoy most about working at MHA Chiks?

The most enjoyable thing about life at MHA Chiks is the strong relationships that I have with my colleagues and clients alike. For me personally, this is the most important factor that I would look for in any future employment, and MHA Chiks certainly ticks that box. I enjoy being part of a team, and having the knowledge that there is always someone there to support me whenever I need assistance or help whether it is my student mentor, or somebody else within the team.

How has MHA Chiks helped you?

MHA Chiks has helped me to grow and flourish professionally through my ACA qualification, but also as a person. They have taught me an invaluable amount of expertise and know-how in the two years since I started working here, and I have no doubt that I will continue to learn as I am exposed to new and different situations.

What are your goals for the future?

My goals for the future are to continue to develop both professionally, and as a person, in the knowledge that this will stand me in good stead for my future endeavours in all aspects of life, no matter what they may be.

What advice would you give to somebody starting at MHA Chiks?

I would advise somebody starting at MHA Chiks to make the most of every opportunity available to them, as in turn these will open doors that previously were never thought possible.

Why did you choose a training opportunity/career with MHA Chiks?

I chose a training opportunity with MHA Chiks as it was an opportunity which allowed me to study for internationally recognised qualifications at the same time as I learnt and developed skills in a professional workplace environment.

This has enabled me to gain both theoretical and practical knowledge / experience simultaneously through my exam studies and from exposure to clients.

Can you describe your job role on a day to day basis?

My job role involves accounts preparation and audit for various types of entity, such as limited companies, charities and pension schemes; with the majority of my time spent auditing.

My role within the team involves:

  • Assisting with planning the audit;
  • Acting as in charge senior of the audit fieldwork;
  • Completing whole sections of the audit file prior to the audit manager reviewing the file.

This involves spending a significant amount of my working time based at client premises discussing audit matters with the client and working with colleagues to perform audit testing on the clients accounting records.

What do you enjoy most about working at MHA Chiks?

The most enjoyable element of my role is the variety of work, as I am exposed to a wide range of accounting and audit issues meaning that no two days are the same.

As I move from audit to audit, the type of work I am doing can vary from one day to the next and involves meeting new client staff on a regular basis.

Internally, the team selected to work on each audit will vary depending on the nature of the work which means I get to work with a wide range of colleagues, which I also enjoy.

How has MHA Chiks helped you?

Working for MHA Chiks has enabled me to obtain the AAT qualification and I am now studying towards becoming an ACA qualified accountant, both of these qualifications have enabled me to develop professionally.

The team in which I work also devote a large amount of time to work based training to develop my work based skills alongside my studies on an ongoing basis.

Additionally, I am now more confident about meeting new people personally as a result of meeting new client staff on a regular basis.

What are your goals for the future?

My goals for the future are to pass my remaining ACA examinations at the first attempt and become a client manager.

What advice would you give to somebody starting at MHA Chiks?

Take advantage of the opportunities to develop yourself by taking on higher level work and responsibility from more senior members of staff where possible.
